This breed is generally healthy, but still, as it is with other purebreds, these canines are susceptible to a number of genetic disorders. Hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism affect many breeds. Careful testing of the breeding stock before mating helps prevent them in the offspring. When buying a puppy, ask the breeder for proof the sire and dam are free of these disorders. Bloat is a serious problem in this breed. It can be prevented by feeding the animal several times a day instead of a single meal. Other conditions that may occur in this breed are aortic stenosis (a heart ailment,) digestive problems, and cancerous and benign tumors.

The dogs of this breed will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are fairly active indoors and do best with at least an average-sized yard. These dogs do best in temperate climates as the breed can chill easily in cold weather and have trouble cooling off in very hot weather. They are very reliable and protective around children. These dogs are easily trained and are often eager to learn. Happy, high-spirited, intelligent, energetic, curious, loyal, and affectionate, these dogs make wonderful family pets and companions.
