The breed standard has changed since the early times of these dogs. In the 19th century, these dogs were white, but nowadays, white markings in the dogs of this breed are limited. They should be of such distribution as to enhance the dog's appearance. White color should not exceed one-third of the entire coat. Totally white puppies are sometimes born in a litter when both parents are fawn. White dogs are not used in breeding. They are registered on the Limited option and can participate in all events except conformation shows (Obedience, Agility, Rally and others.)

Medium sized dogs, they stand about 21-25 inches at the shoulder and can weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. They are intelligent, always ready to please, active and affectionate. As the breed standard goes, these dogs should appear hard and clean. They have medium sized eyes. They should be neither too protruding, nor too deeply set. The eyes are usually dark in color and have an intelligent expression. The nose is broad, as is the upper jaw. The bite is undershot.
